Betsy DiJulio

Artist, Veer art reviewer, 2009 Virginia Beach Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year

When asked to choose my Top 5 exhibitions of 2009, I proposed instead my Top 5 artworks because, when I reflect on the last 12 months of art viewing in Hampton Roads, it isn’t so much the exhibitions themselves, but individual pieces, that have made lasting impressions.  So, here they are, in descending order:

5.  The Good House series (photography), T.D. Siegmund, 2009, Faculty Exhibition, TCC VAC

4.  A Voiceless Prayer (three suspended crows; cast glass, steel, wire, stakes), Michael Rogers, Vetri/Alt, ODU University Gallery

3.  Dress Impression with Train (cast glass) Karen LaMonte, 2005, Art of Glass II, Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk

2.  Endeavor (installation of 35 boats; blown glass), Lino Tagliapietra, 1998–2003, Art of Glass II, Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk

1.  Text Rain (video installation), Camille Utterback, 2009, Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, VA Beach
